What is leadership

What is leadership? 

When we think about leadership, 

We should not think what leadership is all about 

Many people think power is leadership. 

If they have power, they think that they have leadership 

But it is not all the time 

If someone has only power, will you respect them all? 

It is not 

For example 

If someone comes here with a gun and say freeze then we might listen to him because he has gun. 

But it doesn’t mean he has leadership. 

When he doesn’t have gun anymore we might not listen to his words. 

Then what is the leadership 

Some think position is leadership. 

In election season, many politicians candidate for president, congressman or mayor even barangay captain 

But the problem is some of them don’t have ability for those positions. 

When I go to mountain ministry, if it is election season many politicians go there and have campaign even they butcher pig and they say ‘do you have any problem?’ ‘if you vote for me, I’ll do like this like that’ but after the election, they no longer visit the mountain area. 

Do you know what people really hate? 

Someone who is in position but actually does not have the ability or character, it would be better not to be in that position at all than to be in that position without the ability or character. 

When someone acts over his own position 

That actuation will create chaos in the group 

It will destroy the flow of leadership. 

Then leadership should be specialist 

Well it is a great diversity of this opinion. 

At least a specialist is respectable. 

Because they study their profession in its deeper sense 

They know their field very well 

He is an able man (professional) of his part. 

But this good point sometime becomes their weak point. 

Because they know only their field 

Therefore they tend to not recognize other field 

So it does not always make specialization equate with leadership 

Today I’d like to share with you omni-directional leadership 

Then what is omni-directional leadership 

It is not only one way it is all the way leadership 

What does it mean all the way leadership? 

360 degree leadership

When Samsung evaluate the high executives of their company 

They evaluate like this 

1, how his boss or directors think of him 

2, how his coworkers (colleague) think of him 

3, how his followers think of him 

This system we can call omni-directional evaluate  

Ex) for me if I think he or she is good 

    I believe he is good no matter what other say or think 

    And if I think someone is not good 

    I don’t trust him no matter what other say 

Leadership is relational influence to move people 

You know when we live here in this world we always have relationship with these three kind of people (boss, coworker, follower) 

Most of the time, we have boss, coworker and follower unless of course you are the president. 

Leadership is not how to handle your follower  

We should consider all of these people (boss, coworker, and follower) including your self. 

Someone had a research on some leaders in the United States (religious leaders, business leaders, military leaders and political leaders) 

And he asked them where they use most of their time and energy 

Their answer is this ‘50% of their time and energy is used for their selves’ 

(25% for boss, 20 % for coworker, 5% for follower) 

They use 50% of their time and energy for upgrading their health, spirituality, and upgrading them selves 

They invest most of their time in caring about themselves. 

This is a surprising result but a very important point 

How about you? 

How much percentage time do you use for your time and energy for yourselves? 

Do you use your time for controlling yourselves? 

Do you use your time for developing your spirituality? 

We are very busy for ministry but we are not busy for ourselves 

You know Benian Coleman (professor in Harvard University) said 

Difference of Prominent (extra ordinary) person and mediocre person (ordinary person) is depending on emotional self control. 

We should control ourselves 

We should care our selves 

Jesus says “love your neighbor as your self” 

But these days, why we do not love their neighbors? 

Because they do not love themselves. 

The most important is with yourself 

Leadership start with love and control of yourself 

As for me I suffered from not liking my self for many years 

When I failed some university entrance exam, I got angry at my self 

When I separate with my lover, I tried suicide 

When my life is not doing well, I got disappointed with myself again. 

But after I received God’s grace I changed now I love myself as I am 

Brothers and sisters think about this 

If you do not love yourself who will love yourself 

If you reject yourself who will accept yourself 

We should love of our self 

Before we control others, we should control ourselves first 

That is what we call ‘self leadership’ 

I’ll give example 

Your loving daughter being wash away by flood 

What will you do? 

Maybe most of you will dive into the water and want to save your daughter 

But that action might kill both of you 

That time you should a have calm attitude and don’t panic 

Think carefully how you can save your daughter without putting both your lives in danger 

The best thing to do is run down ahead of your daughter 

Check if there are trees you can tie your body into 

Use a rope or your clothes and then you dive into the water and get your daughter 

That way you have bigger chances of saving both your lives. 

The point is this one 

If you will save your daughter, you should be safe first 

Today many pastors preach to the church members 

But first we, as ministers should listen to our sermon. 

We preach to them “you pray” but we ourselves do not pray 

We preach to them “you forgive others” but we do not forgive others 

If our spirituality is empty, what will come out from us? 

Another example 

Someone said most of all the churches problems can be solved if the pastor has no problem. 

If the pastor is really a Good Christian that church will have no problem. 

What does it mean by Good Christian? 

When we praise and worship in the church, the pastor should also worship the Lord, do not think about the next program. 

Instead of making evangelical seminar in your church 

We should first love unbeliever’s soul. 

We should really worry about our neighbors and our family going to hell 

Just like the lost sheep 

If you develop yourself, it will influence others 

In the long term, if you do not develop yourself, it might destroy both 

In Korea, many leaders do not use their time to develop them selves. 

Therefore they can not work properly. 

Because they could not upgrade them selves 

Like our computer, our school computer is Pentium 3 

2 years ago that is new model 

But now we have Pentium 4 

Like this, if we do not keep on upgrading ourselves, finally we will be behind than others. 

We should constantly develop and upgrade our self in order for us to catch up with the fast society 

How’s your time management? 

How’s your spiritual management? 

If we do not manage our selves 

If we do not keep on upgrading ourselves, it means, we become stagnant, 

Like a traffic jam because I stop, the other cars can not pass 

Like this if a leader will stop (not develop himself) it will create a heavy traffic Jam. 

When we see improvement and growth in the church, that’s because of the constant development of the church leader (pastor) 

Control ourselves, manage ourselves. 

This is what we call ‘self leadership’ 

If we see Jesus life, he is thoroughly (absolutely) controlling himself 

He is an example of self leadership 

When Jesus saw the crowd around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. (Matthew 8; 18) 

He often withdraw to lonely places and pray (Luke 5; 16) 

He departed into a solitary place (Mark 6;32) 

Why, because he want to recharge from God 

I’d like to emphasize to you this one 

We must constantly recharge ourselves from God 

Someone says “nowadays, the church is too corrupt, so the church needs to be reformed. We have to change all the system.” 

But I will tell that person this one 

“You reform yourself first.” 

They target the world for reformation, 

They subject the world for change, 

But actually they do not reform themselves 

Now we discuss about self-leadership 

What is this? 

We should love and upgrade ourselves 

And next 25% is relationship with the superior (boss) 

This is what we call follow-ship 

In my memory Jesus never says ‘leadership’ 

But Jesus used this word many times ‘follow’ 

Jesus said follow me and I will make you fishers of men (Matthew 4;19) 

If any one who does not carry his cross and follow me can not be my disciple (Luke 14;27) 

Even though he is the son of God he absolutely followed God’s will  

So God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church.(Ephesians 1;22) 

Today, everybody wants to be a leader, not follower 

We want our children to be great leaders for the next generation 

If I pray for your child ‘to be a good follower’ 

Then you might say ‘pastor you pray again’ or maybe become angry at me 

But we have to know this one 

Before we become a good leader we should be a good follower first 

Follow is more powerful (influence) than command. 

When your boss say something 

“Ok you bark, well, someday I will be in your position” 

They don’t follow what the boss says, 

They pretend to listen but actually it just passes out of the other ear 

But the problem is, most of the time your boss knows your mind 

He knows already your intention 

You know, even dog knows if you hate dog 

Also the boss will sense your dislike of him 

On the other hand, if someone (staff or subordinate) has more ability and more background than the boss and listen to what the boss’ say and follow. 

The boss will also know. 

These days in Korea, it is difficult to get a job. 

And young people get a job and they easily quit. 

If you ask them why, they say “the boss is pangit” 

But think about is 

How about Daniel’s boss? 

How about Joseph’s boss? 

Even their boss is not nice they serve their boss sincerely. 

And finally they became great leader 

You know there is no perfect boss 

We are human being 

There is no perfect system. 

Until the Lord of Lords and king of kings comes back to this earth. 

That time every system will be perfect 

Do not be confused and do not expect too much 

Just make good and positive relationship with your boss 

And do your best with your job or duty 

If you follow these things positively, one way or another you can move/touch your boss’ mind and heart. 

This is what we call follow-ship . 

And next relationship is with coworker 

We call it team-leadership. 

Your coworker is different with you 

Different thinking, culture, background 

God grant us different character and different talent 

So we should recognize our coworker as unique 

You know team leadership is really difficult 

Even Jesus disciples 

They trained from Jesus Christ 

They studied Jesus Bible College for 3 years 

They heard Jesus sermon 

They sow many miracles 

But when they almost graduate, you know what they did? 

They asked to Jesus who is the greatest 

Even some disciples mother came to Jesus and asked a favor 

Grant my son to sit in your right side in your kingdom 

So the others got angry 

Why my mother did not come and make “sipsip” 

Then Jesus said to them 

Whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant 

And whoever wishes to be first among you be your slave (matt. 20;26’27) 

And then they went to a hotel 

And have to wash their feet before they sleep. 

In the Israel culture, the slave should wash the feet 

If wala slave 

The lowest junior should clean the others 

But among Jesus’ disciples, nobody think they are junior 

Peter looked around and he thought I’m the head among you don’t even think me cleaning your feet. 

John also looked at Peter and thought hmm, excuse me you were the one who rented my father’s boat and went fishing, 

You didn’t know I’m your young master before. 

And Judas’ thinking, among you I’m have the greatest educational background, I will not wash your feet 

All the disciples think they are not junior. 

That time Jesus was showing the key of team leadership 

He knelt down and started washing his disciples feet one by one 

Brothers and sisters 

You first make a concession to your coworker 

You first kneel down 

You first take initiative 

This is the key to team leadership 

And last is relationship with follower. 

When you address to your follower 

Just think how God did it for us 

Because there is no one higher than God 

How God treats us 

He loves us 

That is why God sent His only son in this world and He died for us. 

In the Bible 13th chapter of John at the 1st verse: 

We can see how Jesus Loves us 

“It was just before the Passover Feast. 

Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. 

 Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.” 

Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. 

Jesus knew that he was going to die. 

Jesus knew His disciples were to forsake Him and leave Him. 

Jesus knew Peter was to deny Him with a curse. 

Jesus already knew that Judas was that night to betray Him with a kiss. 

But Jesus still loved them. 

Now we find here His love is unchangeable. 

Not only that His love has no limit. 

Brothers and sisters 

He loved the people until His last breath. 

When they crucified Jesus on the cross, 

Jesus said “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” 

It is said in Jeremiah 31:3, “I have loved you with an everlasting love.” 

You know in the New Testament which word is mas marami? 

Love and give (X2) 

If you have this mind and treat your follower 

They will really follow you and you will be a great leader 

Chingiz khan leadership goes only for 100 years 

Because, he use the sword. 

But Jesus leadership goes 2000 years and still continues 

Because, he use the love
