1st lecture (history)

첫 번째 강의 

Lord we thank you for giving us this opportunity to study your word, and as we start to this class, you give us your wisdom and thoughtful heart. your Holy Spirit lead and guide us to focus on every subjects. help us to know you more so that we may love you more 

Greetings 

One thing I would like to encourage you early this time is that 

As soon as you graduate from bible school, or even now 

Start pioneering a church 

We know that pioneering a church is not easy 

But it is better to suffer now while you are young 

and I do believe your suffering will not be in vain 

You will receive bountiful harvest when you get old. 

You know if you are killing time and roaming around......

Creating kingdom culture (어떤 교회가 되야 하나) 

every church has a distinguishing character (mark) 

in other words every church has their own culture, 

Your home also has a culture 

Your nation has a culture 

of course ABC has our own culture even you don't recognize yet 

and When you minister, 

When you have pioneering church, 

You have to create culture in your church 

What culture should we create in our church? 

1 welcoming house 

When people come into the church, they should feel comfortable 

They should feel belongingness 

People need Jesus, 

so we should open our door widely in welcoming people into the church. 

Regardless of how they look, status, skin color(rich, poor, fat, thin, short, tall) 

You should always open your hands in welcoming others into the house of the Lord 

2. Worshipping House 

Your church should be praising and worshipping the Lord 

Not just full of music 

You can get music anywhere 

If your music is not pleasing to God 

Then God will not be glorified (noisy to God) 

So churches should be full of praising and worshipping to God 

Praise and worship can bring God's presence 

And touches heart 

It can even change people 

People should be singing, dancing and rejoicing in the presence of  God 

3. House of prayer 

*the key to open the door of heaven is only to pray 

We have to know this one 

God's kingdom can only be established by God's Spirit 

And the Spirit can work with us through our prayer 

We need to pray 

1st through prayer our selfish desires will be broken and we will know God's will for us 

2nd through prayer we can be filled with the Spirit and the gift of the Spirit will be manifested. 

3rd through prayer we can break the Satan's hindrance. 

4th through prayer we can receive the living word of God in the bible, Rhema 

(explain : Rhema and Logos) it is the same the word of God 

Rhema is the spoken Word from God to each individual or to a people today, 

Logos is God's written Word as we have it in the Bible. 

these 2 words are in reality synonyms for each other 

but Pentecostal Christians view Rhema as the voice of the Holy Spirit as it speaks to the believer at the present moment. 

God's Rhema, the direct words of God to the individual 

@ Romans 10;17 

"faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." 

5th through prayer we can receive God's blessings

4. House of preaching the word 

If your message is weak; your pastoral ministry will be weak 

예화 -설교의 창문, 창문이 많으면 너무 밝고 없으면 너무 어둡다 

5 House of healing 

예수 믿고 천국가는것이 구원이 아니다 Holistic salvation 설명  

you may prosper 

in all things and be in health, 

just as your soul prospers. (The book of 3rd John v.2) NKJV 

So when you finish preaching, minister for sick people, pray for them 

6. House of Joy (the church should be fun) 

Outside people always have stress and pressure 

So church should provide happiness, rejoice and laughter 

The church should have a sense of humor 

Do not be too serious 

Of course our mission is serious 

But God's presence gives us strengthen and fullness of joy 

We have to know this one Jesus has humor 

Mark 12; 37 listened to him with delight 

7. Giving house (the church should be generous) 

As Pastor we use to receiving (생일잔치 초대. 어디 같다오면 선물, 농사지면 선물)that is why we are good at receiving and we think we are right(proper) to receive something because “I'm pastor”. 

That is why sometimes we don't know how to give.

Joy means J-Jesus o-others Y-yourself 

Your culture will influence others 

There will become a chain reaction 

From one person, it will then multiply

China, Korea and Japan had a common cultural heritage 

Although these three countries had a common cultural back ground for a long time 

Each country had originally developed its own cultural identity. 

Before, we use the same letters (한문 -설명) 

We all use chopsticks and have the same bath culture 

Japan sauna every day change for man and for lady 

We have something in common with China and Japan 

It seems we look similar but actually we are different 

In the early century, Japan started to accept western civilization 

Unlike Japan, Korea did not open for civilization 

So we were late for modernization than other countries 

The '''Taft-Katsura Agreement'''(설명) 

was a secret agreement signed between [William Howard Taft-United States Secretary of War and Katsura Taro-Prime Minister of Japan], in July 1905 you know what is content in this agreement 

by 20 million $ US bought Philippines from Spain 

Bessang pass monument 

When you go to Ilocos Sur to Cervantes 

You will pass by a high mountain and there in the mountain top , 

There is a monument stand and there was written like this: 

"The Battle of Bessang Pass" 

It was where the American together with the Filipino fought with the Japanese 

Where more than 3,000 Japanese soldier died and injured 

But among the 3,000 Japanese were actually Koreans 

Many Korean died here in the Philippines as Japanese 

Under the Japanese time(잠깐 설명) 

1st Protestant missionary in the Philippines ->1899, James B. Rogers (Presbyterian) 

1st AG missionary 

BenJamin H Caudle and his family received appointment from the foreign mission department of the US AG in Springfield , Missouri on dec 30 1925 as a 1st missionaries to the philippines they arrived in manila in september 1926 and stayed in Malate and there he distributed large numbers of pamphlets and other AG. literature on the streets, in the parks of manila and outlying villages and he also preached in the markets and on the street of the surrounding town 

but they returned to US  due to Mrs Caudle's health and no one to continue the work they started... 

*when the philippines was under the American from 1898-1945 

that time many Filipinos had a chance to go to America for work or study 

**from Jan. 1920 to Dec. 1929,the estimate of the total net increase of filipino migration to the US and hawaii  was 81,149 

out of this number, many of them were saved and received the pentecostal  outpouring In america and some of them studied in bible schools and went back to philippines to preach to their own people 

And they wanted AG USA appoint missionary to help them become organized. PGCAG 

And on Dec 24 1939. Leland E. Johnson and his wife and two children landed in manila. He contacted local leader and finally the 1st convention was held in San Nicolas, villasis, Pangasinan on March 21-27 1940 

And  Johnson was appointed as superintendent

PAG rapidly grew and they needed more worker 

Bethel bible institute was opened in Baguio on august 1 1941 

And 12 students enrolled (Juan Soriano was one of them) 

History of BBC 

Housed on a rented two-story building on a hill in New Lucban Subdivision, Cervantes Hill, Baguio city, Bethel Bible Institute was founded on August 10, 1941 - the first Bible school of the Assemblies of God in the Philippines. There were twelve students. Except for one Filipino, all the faculty members were American. 

The school was closed when the war broke out in December 08, 1941. After liberation, Bethel Bible Institute was reopened on June 02, 1946 in Pozzorubio, Pangasinan under the leadership of Rev. Rudy C. Esperanza who was a part of the original faculty in Baguio. Twenty students held classes and they moved to its present location in Malinta Valenzuela City in Aug. 1948

On Dec. 8 1941 16 Japanese air planes made their sneak attack on Camp John Hay, a U. S. military base in Baguio 

At the same time in Clark field Air base in Pampanga, Nichols field near manila and Cavite was attacked and had great destruction. Soon US declared War against Japan 

And Philippines became a battle ground 

No more missionary work, they were all interned (later on they evacuated and went back America) and Filipinos were left to carry on the work 

Anyway, a convention was held in Pozorrubio Pangasinan in Dec. 1943 

And the speaker was Enrique sobrepena (leader of United  evangelical Church - later on 1948  this group formed UCCP) 

And they were inviting the AG to Join them but the council decided not to join 

Elva Bandervout 

She is The 1st AG missionary for the Cordillera 

and when I talk  about her, it also add-up to philippines church history 

1944 a mission convention was held in the bethel temple church in los angeles and Elva Vanderbout had attended 

On the  2nd day,  the speaker invited church members who want to give their life for the lost  

she said amen and ran to the altar

on dec. 15 1946 she left her home country she got on a ship and it took her 22 days travelling and finally on Jan 7 1947 필리핀 도착/ 뚜딩에서 미니스트리 시작

1955 번함팍 쿠루세이드 1500 명식 모임 힐링, 콘벌트이드, 마운틴 영피플 불러서 공부시킴 (다니엘 고고이) 8 churches were constructed under her direction 

Elva vandervout was married to Juan Soriano April 1963 

And she resigned as AG missionary 

And in march 1964, Walter Erola and his wife , former missionaries to Burma, were assigned to Baguio and they worked here 

And in April 1967, Elva started Bethel church inc. 

And later on Donald followed father's footsteps and became a minister 

And in 1970 they had divided again his father and a group of older ministers formed Calvary Gospel tabernacle inc. 

And Donald was elected as president 1975 

And he is care bethesta chidrens home 1975-2006 

And elva return to US in poor health and went heaven in oct. 1990 

PRESENTLY AG church HAS 20 distric (NLDC가 가장큼, 362교회-내년에 2지방으로 갈라짐) 

3,300 churches AND 420,000 members
