Resurrection 

FILIPINOS tend to give more emphasis to Good Friday than to Easter Sunday. They focus more on the death of Christ than on His Resurrection. And yet the Resurrection is at the heart, at the center of Christianity. Christianity would be futile and meaningless if Christ had not been resurrected. For Paul, the Resurrection of Christ is the essence--the heart of the believer's existence. 

The Resurrection of Christ is one of the many distinguishing features that separate Christianity from other religions. Other religions are based on the philosophy of life or ethical teachings of their founders. In contrast, Christianity is based on historical events that took place in time and in space. The Crucifixion and the Resurrection are recounted by eyewitnesses in the Gospels. 

Peter Walker, who delivered lectures on theology at Oxford, said that the central truth of the Resurrection is that "Jesus is alive today." This means that a relationship with Jesus is as possible for Christian believers today as it was for the disciples who knew Him in Galilee 2,000 years ago. Walker said that this is achieved through the Holy Spirit. This is possible because "Jesus was, and is alive." Walker said, "If they could meet Him then, we, too, can meet Him today." 

Theologian Marcus Borg, speaking at a Jesus Seminar, said that the death and resurrection of Jesus open the way to leave behind our old lives, dominated by self and sin, and to walk into the new life of Christ. Borg links Jesus' command to take up the Cross and follow Him with this concept: As Christians follow Christ as disciples, they die to self and begin to find their new lives in Christ. To have new life, death must occur first: the death of self and rebirth to the new life of Christ. 

When we celebrate the Resurrection on Easter Sunday, let us ponder these things. They may have a parallel in our nation's life. Certain things, certain bad practices, certain rotten institutions may have to be done away with, they may have to "die" for the nation to enjoy a rebirth and a new life.

필리핀 사람들은 부활절(Easter Sunday)보다 수난일(Good Friday)을 더 강조하는 것 같다. 

이들은 예수의 부활보다 죽음에 더 초점을 맞추고 있는 것 같은 느낌이다.(실제로 많은 필리핀 사람들이 수난일에는 고기를 먹지않으며 더러는 금식을 하기도 하고 또 젊은이들은 PENETENSIYA라고 하여 예수의 수난을 모방하여 자신을 채찍으로 때리며 스스로 고행하기도 하며 실제로 자기 자신을 십자기에 못 밖기도 한다) 하지만 기독교의 중심사상은 부활이다. 그리스도의 부활이 없는 그리스도사상은 헛되고 무의미할 뿐이다. 사도바울은 “그리스도의 부활은 신앙인 마음속에 존재하는 본질이다.”라고 말하였다 

기독교가 다른 종교와 구별되는 특징 중에 하나가 그리스도의 부활이다. 다른 종교들은 창시자의 삶의 철학이나 윤리적인 가르침에 그 토대를 두고 있는 반면에 기독교는 시대와 장소에서 일어난 사건들을 그 기초로 하고 있다. 십자가사건과 부활사건은 복음의 목격자들에 의해서 전해내려 온 것이다 

옥스포드에서 신학을 강의하는 Peter Walker는 “부활의 핵심 진리는 예수가 오늘 살아계시다는 것이다”라고 말하고 있다. 이 의미는 2000년 전에 갈릴리에서 예수를 만났던 제자들처럼 오늘날 우리 신앙인들도 예수를 만날 수 있으며 그것은 성령을 통하여 이루어진다고 Walker는 강조한다. 그는 “예수는 살아나셨고 지금도 살아 계시다.” 때문에 그(예수)와의 교제는 가능하다. 2000년 전에 그(제자들)들이 예수를 만났다면 오늘 우리가 예수를 만나지 못할 이유가 무엇인가? 라고 반문하고 있다. 

신학자 Marcus Borg는 “예수의 죽음과 부활이 죄와 자신에 의해 지배 받던 옛 삶을 버리고 그리스도의 새 삶을 따를 수 있는 길을 터놓았다”라고 말하였다. 십자가를 지고 나를 따르라는 예수님의 명령의 의미는 자기 자신을 죽이고 그리스도안에서 새 삶을 찾았던 예수의 제자들 처럼 하라는 것이다. 새 삶에는 죽음이 전제되어야 한다. 자기자신을 죽이고 그리스도의 새 생명으로 다시 태어나라는 것이다. 

부활절에 예수의 부활을 기념하며 이것을 우리(필리핀)국가현실에 대비시켜 한번 생각해 보자. 

우리의 밝은 미래와 앞날을 위해서 우리는 정말 많은 잘못된 습관들과 부패한 제도들을 도려내야만 할 것이다.
